History

The Malibu West Fire Safe Council (Council) was formed in 2022 to address the needs of the Malibu West Swimming Club Homeowners Association (Malibu West).

Malibu West is a close-knit community of 238 residences tucked way into the western ridge of Trancas Canyon in the more rural west end of Malibu, developed in the early 1960s as a small lot subdivision. Houses and condos are built closely, some on steep slopes and ridgelines and hemmed in by rugged canyon walls. Residences are built along several private streets and cul-de-sacs with only one evacuation route out via Trancas Canyon Road.

Malibu West consists of mostly ranch and post and beam construction in a mid-century modern design blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Homes are sited amongst old-growth native sycamores and oak trees.

Malibu West homeowners are incredibly concerned about brush clearance, structure protection, water availability, safe evacuation routes, environmental damage, loss of and damage to the habitat, and the animals, fish, and plants that live side-by-side with wildland. Still, we know it only takes a howling wind to send flames and embers to our beautiful parkland, homes, and community.
